When the children reach grade 3 they are usually ripe and ready for their first outings. The very first outing with the whole class is often to a local farm in connection with our Farming Main Lesson.
Once the children have had a taste of being out together they are mostly very keen for the next step, the first Camp.
Going away together in an informal way yet to a structured program in a secure, safe setting brings many elements of growth and learning to the children that are totally different to those they encounter I the classroom.
We always take them to a beautiful setting, usually near the sea. We have been to Stanford, beyond Hermanus, several times, to Silvermine and to Geelbek National Park.
The opportunity to explore nature is given to the children and along with that many informal environmental lessons.
The children are faced with lots of new experiences like hiking, map orientation, swimming, canoeing, absailing, practical problem solving and teamwork of a kind that if they do not pull together as a team the challenge cannot be managed.
Other activities include obstacle races, singing, performing skits and various educational games.
